Serena Williams Cleared for Potential Tennis Comeback as 23-Time Grand Slam Champion Becomes Eligible to Compete Again Starting February 22, 2026 After Four-Year Competitive Absence

Serena Williams, the legendary 23-time Grand Slam champion, is once again at the center of global tennis headlines after a major development in her post-retirement story. On February 10, 2026, the International Tennis Integrity Agency officially listed Williams, now 44, as eligible to return to professional tennis competition starting February 22, 2026, marking a crucial procedural step for any potential comeback.

Williams hasn’t competed on the WTA Tour since the 2022 U.S. Open, where she bowed out in the third round — a farewell that was widely considered the end of her illustrious career. At that time she described her departure not as retirement but as “evolving away” from the sport, focusing on her family and exploring new interests.

What This Eligibility Means
Under ITIA rules, a retired player must re-enter the anti-doping testing pool and be available for out-of-competition drug testing for at least six months before she can compete in sanctioned events. Williams fulfilled this requirement by rejoining the testing pool late last year, paving the way for her reinstatement and eligibility to play in tournaments as soon as February 22.

Despite now being eligible to play, Williams has made no formal announcement confirming she will return to competitive tennis. She previously reacted to comeback speculation on social media, humorously dismissing it — “Omg y’all I’m NOT coming back” — though more recent comments suggest she’s keeping her options open.

Williams also addressed the possibility in a televised interview, saying she’s enjoying life and “going to see what happens,” without ruling anything out.
The tennis world has responded with excitement and speculation. Some analysts and former players believe that should Serena choose to compete — whether in singles, doubles, or even mixed doubles — her return would electrify the WTA Tour and draw massive global interest. Others note her sister Venus Williams’ own recent comeback, adding to the possibility of the iconic duo appearing together again on the big stage.

If she does decide to play, potential early entries on her schedule could include tournaments like the ATX Open or even larger events such as Indian Wells and the Miami Open, which take place soon after her eligibility date. But for now, speculation continues, and fans around the world remain eagerly attentive to any word from the tennis legend herself.
