Full List: Burna Boy, Ayra Starr miss out as Taylor Swift, others bag 2024 MTV VMAwards

Nigerian trio of Damini Ogulu, known better as Burna Boy; Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, known professionally as Ayra Starr, and Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, all missed out on clinching an award at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.

South African artist Tyla won the male-dominated category of best Afrobeats with her hit Water, edging out both Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tems.

“The global impact that Water had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music, too,” Tyla said after winning the award in Elmont, New York.

She noted that the award was “bittersweet” because “there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats … African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”
