Rick Devens, Taylor Brown and the Final Two Twist That Changed the Big Brother 28 Finale
The final hours of Big Brother 28 delivered one of the season’s biggest strategic surprises when Rick Devens abandoned his original plan to take Drew Campbell to the Final Two and instead chose Taylor Brown.
Heading into the finale, Devens had been open about his intention to sit beside Drew if he won the final Head of Household competition. The two had developed a close relationship in the house, and Devens had previously indicated that he intended to honor their Final Two arrangement.
But Taylor had one last opportunity to change his mind.
After Devens secured the final Head of Household victory, Taylor made an aggressive late-game argument. She told him that if he chose Drew, she and Lala would not vote for him in the jury—and suggested that additional jurors could also favor Drew. Devens later explained that the possibility of losing the $750,000 prize because of those votes forced him to reconsider his plan.
The decision was emotionally difficult for Devens. Rather than following through on his earlier promise to Drew, he ultimately evicted him and brought Taylor to the Final Two.
Drew’s departure became one of the most emotional scenes of the finale, with the former ally visibly affected by Devens’ decision. The move demonstrated how quickly a Final Two agreement can disappear when the prize and jury votes are on the line.
Taylor, meanwhile, had successfully pulled off one of the most important strategic conversations of her season. She had spent much of the game operating quietly, surviving six nominations and eventually winning key competitions that helped carry her to the finale. Her final pitch to Devens became arguably her most consequential move of the game because it changed the composition of the Final Two.
Once the two finalists faced the jury, however, Devens ultimately received the overwhelming majority of the votes. He defeated Taylor 6–1 and claimed the $750,000 grand prize, while Taylor finished as runner-up and received $75,000. Devens also earned additional money during the season, including $50,000 as America’s Favorite Houseguest.
Taylor later acknowledged that she was proud of the move that got her into the Final Two. In her post-finale interview, she described the last-minute conversation with Devens as her biggest game move and explained that she deliberately used his own strategic approach against him.
So while the viral-style claim that “Taylor held Rick Devens hostage” makes for a dramatic headline, the documented story is different: Taylor used a last-minute jury-vote argument to persuade Devens to break his promise to Drew, while Devens ultimately made the decision himself and went on to win the season.
