Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has spent multiple Friday nights watching Blue Valley West football games this season, and last week he was joined by a number of his teammates. The Jaguars’ quarterback is Tate Nagy, who is a KU commit and the son of the Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Blue Valley West played Blue Valley on Friday, and the Tigers have a player committed to play at Alabama: linebacker Dawson Merritt. He’s the son of Dave Merritt, the Chiefs’ defensive-backs coach.

Joining Mahomes at last Friday’s game were teammates Chris Jones, Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and others. Chiefs coach Andy Reid also took in the contest. KSHB-TV’s Matt Foster and Fox 4’s Harold Kuntz shared videos and photos from Friday’s game. Mahomes was joined by his wife, KC Current co-owner Brittany Mahomes and their kids.

Blue Valley West won 35-34. Mahomes explained at Wednesday’s news conference why it’s important to be at local high school games. “The Chiefs organization in general has had a great history of having a great presence in this community. It’s something that (Chairman and CEO) Clark Hunt talks about in the first meeting (that) we have every single year is giving back to the community because they give so much to us and being at Arrowhead (Stadium) every single week and showing support to our foundations.

“Just being out there, being at a game and being at a sport I love, letting my kids run around and then seeing coach Nagy’s son and coach Merritt’s son go at it. I mean I’ve seen those kids grow up, so it’s cool to see them live out their dream. Both of them will move on and go to Division I colleges, so it was cool to see their last match-up that they’ll get to go up against each other, and it was a great football game.”
