While there were attempts made to further extend the film’s success into a franchise, with Mr. and Mrs. Smith 2, Jolie later shared in an interview that nothing substantial resulted with their efforts, ultimately resulting in the abandonment of sequel plans.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith went on to become one of the most successful releases at the time, grossing $487 million worldwide. Combined with the film’s success and the star power the lead couple had at the time, there were soon discussions of a sequel.

While the possibility of the former couple reuniting for Mr. and Mrs. Smith 2 is unlikely following their split, the sequel to the 2005 action comedy film had been doomed long before their separation.

Angelina Jolie, who shared the screen with her ex-husband Brad Pitt in the movie, later confirmed that there were plans to extend Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s story in a sequel.

People have tried — And it’s strange: do we have kids in the movie? We’ve thought about that, but it becomes personal now that we actually have kids… We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel.

Unfortunately, little progress was made, as she revealed in a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair. “But there wasn’t anything original,” she said before adding, “It was just, ‘Well, they’re going to get married, or they’ve got kids, or they get separated.’ Never great.”

Although Mr. and Mrs. Smith 2 never came to fruition, the former couple did share the screen again in the 2015 romantic drama By the Sea, shortly after getting married in 2014. However, their marriage ended nearly two years later when Jolie filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Eventually Returned to the Screens
While plans for a sequel were abandoned due to a lack of significant progress, Mr. and Mrs. Smith was re-imagined as a TV series reboot featuring a new cast of spies who live undercover as a married couple.

Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the new series Mr. & Mrs. Smith debuted earlier this year on Amazon Prime Video. Inspired by the 2005 film, it follows two strangers who become secret agents posing as a married couple, navigating missions that test both their espionage skills and their developing relationship.

The series premiered to positive reviews, with critics praising the chemistry and performances of Glover and Erskine. It received 16 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama. Just three months after its premiere, the show was renewed for a second season, although a release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
