Decision comes after the pair were asked to give up Frogmore Cottage in Britain
After being evicted from their Windsor residence, Frogmore Cottage, by King Charles,Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have secured a new property in Portugal.
The couple, who are primarily based in California, now have a European home, allowing them to maintain connections across the Atlantic despite stepping back from royal duties.
The Sussexes are not the only royals with ties to Portugal. Prince Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, also own property in the country.
Their home is located at the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, a luxurious development by the sea in Melides, just south of Lisbon. Brooksbank, who works in marketing and sales for CostaTerra, spends time between Portugal and London with Eugenie and their two children.
Portugal purchase may offer Visa perks
Acquiring a home in Portugal could also provide Harry and Meghan with a “Golden Visa,” granting them visa-free access to the Schengen area in Europe.
This would be particularly beneficial for Meghan, a U.S. citizen, who initially planned to apply for British citizenship after the couple’s engagement in 2017. However, after their decision to leave the UK in March 2020, those plans were abandoned.
The couple’s connections to Portugal grew following a reported visit to CostaTerra after attending the Invictus Games in Germany.
The Sussexes enjoyed a discreet, three-night stay near Melides, where they had previously been hosted by Eugenie and Brooksbank. The CostaTerra development, known for its exclusivity, is a popular retreat for celebrities and high-profile individuals.
Though Harry and Meghan’s main home remains in Montecito, California-an expansive estate valued at 19.5 million pounds, their new Portuguese property offers them a private escape in Europe. This move, coming after their departure from Frogmore Cottage and the UK, marks a significant step in their ongoing quest for independence from the royal family.
