On a recent episode of The View, the co-hosts and a special guest were talking about kitchen tips for Thanksgiving. During the conversation, co-host Joy Behar revealed an incident in which she had stabbed herself in an accident. At one point, she alluded to needing to go to a hospital to treat the wound

The View Was Getting Ready For Thanksgiving
Towards the end of the show, chef and television personality Alex Guarnaschelli appeared as a guest. She shared some recipes from her cookbook Italian American Forever.

During the segment, the co-hosts shared even eating at Guarnaschelli’s home and enjoying her food. The chef then pointed out that Thanksgiving was coming up, meaning people who don’t normally cook will soon be finding themselves in the kitchen. She also shared the advice to make a menu in advance, but cut it in half before preparations begin.

Joy Behar was then tasked with helping the chef prepare a squash pasta. The co-hosts then asked for tips when it came to cutting squash.

At first, Guarnaschelli made a joke, saying, “It’s…how you go about your day, get a big knife.” Amid laughter, Behar then chimed in, “Don’t stab your husband.”

Joy Behar Warned Viewers About Avocado Hand
Things took a dark turn, however, when Behar shared a story in which he hurt herself while using a knife. She shared, “A couple of years ago I got what they call Avocado Hand. Be very careful when you cut an avocado. I stabbed myself, I had to go to the hospital, yes.”

Behar continued, “But, there is a thing called Avocado Hand. A lot of people do it. A lot of stupid people like me.”

As noted by Decider, the incident had occurred in 2018 and caused Behar to miss an episode. At the time, she explained what happened on the show: “Saturday night…I stabbed myself in the hand with a knife. I stuck the knife into the pit [of the avocado] to get it out…I never had pain quite so intense, it was awful.”

According to the University of Utah Health, “Avocado hand happens when a person uses a knife to remove the pit of an avocado but, instead, slices through the soft fruit into their hands or fingers. The consequences can be devastating.”

The publication also also noted that, “One in four people go to the emergency department due to injuries to their hand. It’s one of the most injured parts of the body.”
