According to Tyson, the problem began developing during the height of his boxing career, when he frequently trained and competed under extreme conditions. He explained that the choice to often fight and spar without properly airing out or changing his damp training gear, combined with the humid environments of many gyms, created a perfect breeding ground for fungal infections. Over time, he says, these repeated exposures led to a chronic issue that has lingered well beyond his retirement.
“It’s still kicking my —,” Tyson admitted, noting that the infection has been surprisingly resilient despite treatment. While he didn’t specify the exact type of fungus, he described the condition as uncomfortable, irritating, and capable of flaring up unexpectedly—sometimes interfering with his workout routine and daily comfort.
Tyson’s revelation highlights an often overlooked side of professional sports: the long-term health impacts that can arise from the grueling, unglamorous aspects of training. The boxing icon says he hopes his experience encourages young athletes to be more attentive to proper hygiene, recovery habits, and preventative care.
