The altercation between Kelce and an unidentified fan took place just before the Ohio State-Penn State football game on Saturday, Nov. 2

Penn State University Police are investigating the Nov. 2 incident involving Jason Kelce and an unidentified college football fan at the school, PEOPLE can confirm.

Penn State verified on Monday, Nov. 4 that University Police and Public Safety are looking into the moment when the former NFL star, 36, smashed the phone of a heckler who appeared to call Kelce’s brother Travis a homophobic slur.

The university did not specify whether they were investigating Jason, the football fan or how the incident transpired.

PEOPLE has reached out to representatives for both Jason and ESPN.

Jason, who was at the campus for an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay during the Penn State-Ohio State game, can be seen in multiple videos posted on social media surrounded by fans as he made his way inside the stadium holding a case of beer.

In now-viral footage shared on X (formerly Twitter), the football fan is seen approaching Jason and asking, “Hey, Kelce. How does it feel your brother’s a f—– dating Taylor Swift?” the man asked, using the slur to refer to Travis, 35, who has been dating Swift, 34, since 2023.

Seconds later, Jason turned around, grabbed the man’s phone out of his hands and smashed it on the ground. The NFL alum then stood in front of the man and said, “Who’s the f—– now?” as other people appeared to intervene.

The phone’s owner, who was wearing a Penn State hoodie at the time of the incident, could be seen walking closely behind and seemingly recording Jason before the altercation took place.

“Looked like a Penn State student was getting in Kelce’s face for no reason,” the initial X user who posted the clip wrote alongside it. “Wild scene in State College.”

In footage shared by another user on X, apparently captured just after the phone was smashed, the Penn State fan is seen walking through the crowd looking for his phone. At one point, he seemingly said to Jason, “Give me my phone, bro.”
