Celebrities beefing with one another is a norm in the industry, but a particular clash with a non-celeb made headlines recently. Whoopi Goldberg has been very vocal about her political views, but according to the actress, this cost her a cake.

The EGOT winner claimed that a bakery in New York refused to take her order allegedly because of her political stance. However, the accused in question denied her claims citing equipment issues as the real reason why they had to decline the The Color Purple actress’s order. But this scandal is nothing when fans recall the time she was suspended by her network due to an insensitive Holocaust remark.

Whoopi Goldberg has gained several accolades over the years for her striking performances and Broadway works. However, the Sister Act actress recently made headlines for an unusual accusation against a New York bakery.

The View host narrated an incident in one episode about ordering some Charlotte russe cakes from a local bakery, which was declined. The Soapdish actress sarcastically stated cakes had no political standings and later implied that her order was rejected because the owners disliked her left-leaning ideals (via NBC News).

Now, I should tell you, charlotte russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me, perhaps they did not like my politics.

Though she didn’t outright reveal the bakery’s identity, the packaging details led to its owner, Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island. After this, the bakery owner, Jill Holtermann stepped forward to disparage the accusation levied against them (via Entertainment Weekly).

They’d asked us and we were having trouble with our boilers…I said to Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now. We have so many things going on with my boiler.’

The matter got so escalated that even the borough president, Republican Vito Fossella got involved. However, this is not the first time the Clara’s Heart actress got involved in a public scandal, her 2022 incident led to even harsher consequences.

A slip of the tongue almost cost her a bright future

Antisemitism had been a recurrent problem for a long time and so in 2022, Goldberg came under fire due to her unthought-out comment about the Holocaust. One of the most painful chapters in history and still a nightmare for Jews today, the experience caused a massive emotional and traumatic toil for the world.

This is why the network did not hesitate to suspend The Lion King voice actor when she repeatedly declared the Holocaust had nothing to do with race. During one of her episodes for The View, the co-host made that sharp remark which led to ABC suspending her for two weeks (via NPR).

While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.

Kim Godwin, ABC News’ president even went on to assure the public that they stood by the victims. The Toy Story 3 voice actor also faced a lot of backlash along with the professional repercussions due to her statement.

While this may not be her intention, her claims did hurt the sentiments of many netizens at the time. Currently, the bakery claimed they have seen an influx of orders ever since Goldberg’s accusations denoting the public’s support for them (via NBC News).
