Jennifer Lopez made her first significant public appearance since filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, participating in a prerecorded segment for the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special on Sunday.
The 55-year-old actress and singer shared in the segment that watching the awards show as a child helped inspire her journey to global fame.
“It’s pretty incredible, right?” the A-lister said. “Fifty years of the American Music Awards. I remember watching them at
home when I was a little girl.”
Lopez, known for her hit “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” mentioned that she made her debut at the American Music Awards in 2001, recalling, “It was so long ago – but the energy in the room was very electric.”
The singer-actress filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on August 20, which marked their two-year wedding anniversary after their lavish ceremony in Georgia in 2022.
During the segment, Lopez wore a pink blouse and reflected on her 2011 win for Favorite Latin Artist, describing the experience as “just a humbling experience.”
She emphasized how meaningful it was to receive a fan-voted award, saying, “Winning a fan-voted award is incredibly special because it’s directly from the people that you make the music for.”
Lopez also reminisced about the honor of hosting the awards show in 2015, mentioning that she embraced various looks throughout the night.
“I decided that I was gonna change for every time I came out there,” Lopez said. “We did this dance medley to all of these amazing songs from that year, and I wanted everyone to feel that love and energy.”
The Hustlers star added, “Maybe I’ll do it again one day. Who knows?”
Having performed at the American Music Awards numerous times, Lopez expressed her belief that “music really does have the power to heal and uplift and to connect us, and the AMAs have been showcasing that for half a century now.”
She also shared her excitement for the future of music, saying she was “excited for the next 50 years of music – and magic.”
Lopez’s divorce filing on August 20, 2024, from Affleck followed months of speculation about their relationship troubles. The couple’s high-profile issues had been the subject of Hollywood headlines for months.
