Jason Kelce began ESPN’s broadcast of “Monday Night Countdown” by addressing his altercation with a Penn State football fan this past weekend. The delivery came in the lead-up to Monday night’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’m not happy with anything that took place,” Kelce said during the show’s opening segment. “I’m not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s a productive thing. I really don’t. I don’t think it leads to discourse and (I don’t think) it’s the right way to go about things. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have.

The bottom line is, I want to live my life — I try to live my life — by the ‘golden rule,’” Kelce continued. “That’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency, respect, and I’m going to keep doing that moving forward even though I fell short this week.”

Kelce then redirected the conversation back to coverage of Monday night’s game, adding that he “didn’t think this was the platform, necessarily, to go into more detail.”

On Saturday, Kelce slammed a fan’s phone onto the ground after taunts and a homophobic slur were said toward him. While walking behind Kelce, a fan can be heard using a homophobic slur regarding the relationship between Taylor Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Jason’s brother: “Kelce, how does it feel that your brother is a fa— for dating Taylor Swift?”

After appearing to hear the question, Jason turned around and appeared to take the phone of the fan who said the slur and throw it on the ground. The fan then demanded Jason give him the phone back, to which Jason said: “Who’s the fa— now?”

Kelce, the former Philadelphia Eagles center, was in State College to appear on “College GameDay,” which was also in town to highlight the top-5 matchup between Penn State and Ohio State.

Swift is in attendance for Monday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium Monday night. A regular attendee of Chiefs games since she began dating Travis in 2023, she last attended a Chiefs game on Oct. 7 during Kansas City’s Monday night win against the New Orleans Saints.
