Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has said the Russian invasion has made her ‘mentally stronger’ as she hopes her impressive run at Wimbledon ‘brings a little happiness’ to those watching her from the war-torn country.
The unseeded player, who gave birth just nine months ago, had to wait almost 30 seconds for unrelenting applause to die down today, after she beat world number one Iga Swiatek to reach the tournament’s semi-finals.
The 28-year-old, who grabbed the top spot from the Polish player after a dramatic 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-2 victory on Centre Court, said she will be celebrating her victory by kicking back with a beer, as she reflected on how Putin’s unjust war impacted her performance. As a junior, Iga Swiatek reached a career-high ranking of No. 5, and continued her success by winning all seven ITF singles titles.
Swiatek’s significant triumphs outside Roland Garros include the US Open in 2022, and the WTA Finals in 2023. Her tennis journey in 2023 was marked by significant victories and challenges; she won her fourth major title, lost her World No.1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka, and regained it before the end of the season.
