Amid controversy surrounding his charity Sentebale, Prince Harry is speaking out in support of another cause close to his heart.

The Duke of Sussex was seen for the first time since resigning as patron of Sentebale, an organization he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 dedicated to supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS in not only Lesotho but also Botswana and other parts of southern Africa. On April 1, a video showing Harry outside of his Montecito, California home saw him speak on Travalyst’s five-year milestone report, outlining its achievements and its plans for the year ahead.

Travalyst, an eco-tourism nonprofit, was founded by Harry in 2019, and in the video Harry said, per The Daily Express, that “Travel can do a tremendous amount of good.

It connects us to the destinations we love and to the communities that call these places home.”

“When I started Travalyst six years ago, the goal was simple,” Harry said. “I wanted to harness travel’s power and potential to help create a more resilient work. And I’m proud of what we have accomplished.”

“We are just five years away from the 2030 deadline for the sustainable development goals—the global blueprint for creating a more resilient planet and, quite literally, saving ourselves,” Harry said in the video, per The Mirror.

“But it is quite clear we are not progressing as quickly as needed, and the economic impacts are only growing.”

These realities leave us with a choice—find practical solutions to climate change or accept the massive financial and human losses that it is causing,” he continued. “I think we all agree the latter isn’t the answer.”

It’s unclear when the video was recorded, but Harry continues speaking about the advantages of travel and how Travalyst is “bringing sustainable solutions to the mainstream” by allowing travelers to make more environmentally conscious choices. He highlights Travalyst’s achievements over the past five years, but added that there is “still much more to be done to protect the people and places we all depend on.”

Per The Mirror, Harry’s clash with Sentebale chair Dr. Sophie Chandauka—which includes accusations by Chandauka of “harassment and bullying at scale”—has left the Duke of Sussex “beyond heartbroken and flabbergasted.” Alex Rayner, an old school friend from Eton who traveled all the way to the North Pole with Harry in 2012, said he’d been in contact with Harry over the weekend and said of his friend, “The way he feels is as if he has had one of his fingers cut off.”

At the moment, he is just in total shock about what is being said and the accusations being made,” Rayner added

Harry founded Sentebale two years after traveling to Lesotho for his 2004 gap year, and named it Sentebale—which means “forget-me-not” in Sesotho, the official language of Lesotho—in honor of his mother, Princess Diana, who had died just years before and whose favorite flower was the forget-me-not.

On March 25, news broke that Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso were resigning from their roles as patrons of the organization “until further notice, in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same,” the two men wrote in a statement. “We are truly heartbroken to leave
It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation,” the princes continued. “What’s transpired is unthinkable.

We are in shock that we have to do this, but we have a continued responsibility to Sentebale’s beneficiaries, so we will be sharing all of our concerns with the Charity Commission as to how this came about.”

Although we may no longer be patrons, we will always be its founders, and we will never forget what this charity is capable of achieving when it is in the right care,” they added

On March 25, news broke that Harry quit his own charity, Sentebale, over “infighting,” according to The Telegraph. Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho (located in southern Africa) founded the organization in memory of his late mother, Princess Diana, nine years after her death in a Paris car accident in 1997. Sentebale—which means “forget-me-not” in Sesotho, the official language of Lesotho—supports children affected by HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and nearby Botswana

“With heavy hearts, we have resigned from our roles as patrons of the organization until further notice, in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same,” Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso said in a statement released Tuesday evening. The two princes said in the joint statement that “We are truly heartbroken to leave.”

The Charity Commission said it was looking into “concerns about the governance of Sentebale,” and The Telegraph reported that there was “a devastating breakdown in trust between new chairman Sophia Chandauka, who was appointed last summer, and the board.”

The outlet reported that when the trustees asked Chandauka to step down, she sued Sentebale in order to retain her role.

On Tuesday evening, Chandauka responded with a statement of her own, accusing the board of “abuse of power, bullying, misogyny, and harassment,” according to The Telegraph. She seemingly criticized Harry and the five trustees who resigned, suggesting that Sentebale was a “vanity project” for them and that they were using the media “they disdain” to cause harm, The Telegraph reported.
