The Duke of Sussex and Prince of Wales have become estranged in recent years although the heir did mention his brother in a new ITV documentary
Prince Harry has been told there is only one way he can repair his relationship with his brother William – but he is not going to like it. Hopes of a truce in the war between the Duke of Sussex and Prince of Wales were raised this week when William used his brother’s name in public for the first time in six years.
He spoke of his and Harry’s visit to a homeless shelter with their mother Princess Diana around 30 years ago for an ITV documentary. Commentators have interpreted it as some form of an olive branch, but one royal expert reckons it would have been “odd” for William not to mention Harry.
And Rupert Bell said Harry was going to need to be prepared to “eat some serious humble pie” if he and William were going to be on speaking terms again. The brothers have become estranged since Harry quit royal life with Meghan Markle in 2020.
The Duke of Sussex followed that up with attacks on the institution of monarchy and made bombshell claims about William in his 2023 memoir Spare. They included accusations of a physical attack when William tried to dissuade his brother from marrying Meghan.
Speaking on Kinsey Schofield’s YouTube channel, Bell said Harry would need to make the first move towards a reconciliation. He said: “It would be odd if he didn’t mention in this documentary, his brother, you know, the back story. I’m sure he’s sad about the breakdown, because they were very close.”
Harry has also alienated himself from his father King Charles, although the monarch is more willing to repair their relationship with William and Queen Camilla seen as the major hurdles. Harry described William as his “beloved brother and archnemesis” in Spare. It is unlikely Harry will take the first step in building bridges as he believes he is owed an apology by his family.
