On the opening drive of Sunday’s Week 12 contest at Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers drove right down the field on the San Francisco 49ers and scored a touchdown to open the game 7-0. After their dominant opening drive, the Packers never looked back on the way to a 38-10 blowout over the shorthanded 49ers.

Sunday’s 28-point loss marked the third-worst defeat in the Kyle Shanahan era for the 49ers. While Brandon Allen filled in for an injured Brock Purdy, penalties, turnovers underwhelming performances from star-caliber players and more stacked up against the 49rs on Sunday.

With back-to-back ugly losses to the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, the defending NFC champion 49ers have a 5-6 record and are currently in last place in the NFC West.

Here’s a look at some of the things that went wrong for the 49ers on Sunday, including some of the worst parts of their 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12.

The 49ers were sloppy on Sunday in Green Bay. Shanahan’s offense lacked any rhythm. Although they did have a backup quarterback under center, the 49ers couldn’t get out of their own way when it came to penalties.

Multiple big plays that could’ve sparked the 49ers were called back due to yellow markers being down on the field. with the 49ers’ trailing by only 10 points to start the third quarter, Deebo Samuel blasted past the Packers kickoff return team for an 87-yard kickoff return to give San Francisco their best field position of the night. However, a holding penalty on Eric Saubert brought the kickoff return back to the 31-yard line.

The 49ers racked up nine penalties for 77 yards against the Packers. Sunday was the 49ers second straight game with nine penalties and the third time this season they’ve been called for nine penalties in the game.

The 49ers had no answer for Packers running back Josh Jacobs on Sunday in Green Bay.

Jacobs ran the ball 26 times for 106 and three massive touchdowns in Week 12 against the 49ers. Jacobs became the first player to rush for a 100 yards against the 49ers this season. The Packers posted 169 rush yards on Sunday, matching the most rushing yards against the 49ers this season.

On the way to rushing all over against the 49ers, Jacobs forced 15 missed tackles. Jacobs’ 15 missed tackles forced was the most by any ball carrier this season, according to Next Gen Stats.

Outside of George Kittle, the 49ers stars were quiet on Sunday, including Deebo Samuel. Samuel injected a little life into the 49ers with an 87-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Yet, it was quickly called back due to a holding penalty on Eric Saurbert.

On offense, Samuel recorded a pair of brutal drops from backup quarterback Brandon Allen, including one drop that led to an interception. Allen slung a pass over the middle of the field that went through Samuel’s hands and into the hands of Packers safety Xavier McKinney.

Samuel finished the game with 1 catch for 21 yards on four targets.

While Deebo Samuel was quiet, so was fellow star playmaker Christian McCaffrey. In his fourth game back from injury, McCaffrey struggled to make a positive impact against the Packers. While the run game was non-existent and never really got going in a blowout, McCaffrey’s biggest play of the game came on a pass from Brandon Allen.

In the fourth quarter, McCaffrey caught a ball in space and scurried for 23 yards before fumbling the ball and giving it back to the 49ers. Late in the game, the 49ers fumbled the ball on the opening play of the possession on back-to-back drives.

McCaffrey finished the game with a season-low 31 yards on 11 carries.

Sunday’s 38-10 loss marked the 49ers worst defeat to the Packers in their 74-game history. Their 28-point loss surpassed the 49ers’ previous 27-point loss to the Packers in 1960 as their worst loss to Green Bay.

Their 38-10 loss to the Packers also served as the third-worst loss in Kyle Shanahan’s tenure as head coach of the 49ers.

After back-to-back losses to the Seahawks and Packers, things won’t get any easier for the 49ers. The 49ers will now prepare to travel to Orchard Park for a contest against one of the top teams in the AFC, the Buffalo Bills.

While the 49ers still have a glimmer of hope in the division, the 49ers will still need to go through the Bills, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and the red-hot Miami Dolphins, along with two divisional games against the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals.
